Chief Deputy John Halferty was born and raised in Jasper County and has served in law enforcement for nearly 25 years. He graduated from Newton High School in 1984 and graduated from DMACC with an AS degree in Criminal Justice in 1986. John's career started with the Newton Police Department in 1987 and he served nearly 11 years with the department.

In 1997 John was offered a position with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office by former Sheriff Jim Verwers. In 2000 Sheriff Mike Balmer appointed John as Chief Deputy, a position he continues to hold.

Chief Deputy Halferty has been married for nearly 24 years to Kendra Maher Halferty.  They have two children, Kalyn, age 21 and Jacob, age 17. The family lives on a small acreage between Colfax and Mingo. They are and have been very involved in their children’s activities over the years. The Halferty's attend church at First Baptist Church in Colfax.

Chief Deputy Halferty stays busy with many responsibilities in Jasper County to include:

• Volunteer Fire Fighter with Mingo Fire Department 2000-present
• Tactical Team Leader with Jasper County Sheriff’s Office 1998-present
• Jasper County Medical Examiner Investigator 2005-present
• Colfax-Mingo High School Football Coach 2007-present
• Youth Leader- First Baptist Church-Colfax 1997-present
• Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputies

Also in 1998, John assisted with forming the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT), made up of members of the Sheriff’s Office and other police jurisdictions within Jasper County. The SERT team continues to work as a multi-jurisdictional unit assisting with search warrants, high risk incidents, lost persons and major incidents including natural disasters and storms.

Chief Deputy John Halferty has served the public with honesty and integrity for nearly 25 years. He has worked to make Jasper County a safe place to live and raise a family.
